Flood Appeals

(Centenary Highway)

Yesterday we tried to get to my husbands work to see how badly flooded it was there. They have a creek that runs along the back and it floods easily. I took a couple of photos along the way... of things I have never seen before and I hope I never see again. We also went to check on my sister-in-laws house and this is how close it came up her street.....
We are standing in front of her house.
We are definitely the lucky ones.
I have been madly stitching away a sewing caddy to send to the Gum Tree girls (go HERE to see what those wonderful girls are doing for the flood victims)
I really wanted to get it finished before I head off to Melbourne tomorrow. I am spending some time with my brother and I'm pretty sure I won't find a sewing machine anywhere in his house!!!

I was very lucky to receive for Christmas from my lovely buddy Tereasa a sewing caddy pattern. How did she know I would need it so soon?
There are so many wonderful raffles and auctions out there and every little bit helps.

I will probably be MIA for a while as I'm not sure if I will get near a computer in the next couple of weeks.
I will catch up with you all when I get back .... I will miss you and will try and sneak on to a computer to see what you're all up to if I can.
Take care and see you soon,

Flood update

This is a photo my son James took yesterday. It shows the Brisbane Eye on the bank of the Brisbane River. Behind it is the Lyric Theater, then the Museum, where he works.
The scale of these floods is just so hard to take in. I am finding it very difficult to get motivated in doing anything as I am constantly hearing something on the news, and then find myself sitting on the lounge, unable to stop watching. What is unfolding today in Grantham is just heart wrenching.
My heart goes out to everyone affected by these floods.
There are so many wonderful bloggers out there giving so much to raise money for the Premier's Flood Relief Appeal.
I'm sure you've seen all the sites..there are so many... it's just wonderful!
Thank you to everyone who is doing whatever they can.
Stay safe everyone!

The flooding...

I am a little late today in posting.... I was going to post my Tuesdays Treasures, but I've been finding it difficult to do, what with the devastating news of the Queensland floods. I am still in shock with what happened in Toowoomba yesterday and the news footage and updates of the flooding have seen me constantly on the lounge watching it, trying to take it all in and understand what is happening to our beautiful state.
We decided late this afternoon to visit our local township and to stock up on a few necessities. Originally it was for the pantry to make sure the boys had something to eat while I was away next week, but like everyone else, it became necessary for the immediate future. There were a lot of things unavailable and many shelves were entirely empty.... Lots of shops were already closed.
Getting there proved to be a bit of a hurdle, with 3 of the 4 roads away from our property being flooded and were closed.
Macleans bridge is the highest I have ever seen in 23 years of living here and the local bridge (which I thought would never go under) is now looking a little shaky.
I am still very worried about my eldest son who was working in the City today. The trains have stopped running in the CBD and he had to bus it home. Luckily they let them all go home early. Unfortunately where he lives though, is prone to flooding and it looks like the waters are going to rise higher than the 1974 floods.
My sister lives at Caboolture and she and her 2 daughters (along with the rest of the town) have been evacuated. I haven't been able to reach her on the phone all afternoon.
It's such a worry and the waiting is just awful. My heart is breaking for the people who have lost their lives, their property and those that are still missing. It's just devastating.

(Mt Lindsay Highway - closed)
(To the left of this bridge, way, way down is the old bridge we used to drive over to get to town)

(Logan River - Macleans Bridge)
(Scott's Lane - now closed)
(Jack Cusack Bridge - Henderson Creek - now closed)

I'd like to thank all my wonderful friends out there who have emailed and phoned me today to check on us and to make sure we are all okay. I will eventually answer the emails! But I just want you to know how much I appreciate your concerns..... A HUGE THANK YOU XXXX
Stay safe everyone!

Tuesdays Treasures

A few years back I completed a year-long challenge by the wonderful, artistic Emily (an Aussie girl living in the US). The challenge was to turn a deck of cards into little masterpieces. Each card would represent a week of the year.
Each week Emily posed a question or statement and we had to answer it by altering a card anyway we saw fit. I used just about anything and everything I could to make my cards. I also used jumbo sized cards so I had a little more space to work on.
I just love my cards and I still go through them every now and then and enjoy doing so. The fun part was really in the making of them though. I am very glad I stuck to the challenge and completed the whole year.
I made a bag to keep them all in, but after 2 months I realised I needed something bigger to hold them all. This box is now their home.
I am off to Melody's to see who else is playing today.
I hope you're having a great Tuesday!

What Makes Me Happy 3/1/11

I have to do something... (other than take random photos while I wait for hubby "patiently" in the car in the hot, hot sun!!!!!)
Last year I enjoyed my "What Makes me Happy" posts so much and I am considering doing it again this year- or maybe a Gratitude Journal - and I've realised I would miss these posts too much if I didn't do something along those lines.
So without further ado (and for the time being).....

What makes me happy today is....
I have finished making the curtains for my Mum's bus.. woo hoo!!! Now I just have to deliver them (that will also make me happy!)
It has been very hot and humid here today, but we've just had another storm and the weather has finally taken a cooler turn... another happy!!!
I also wanted to show you the gorgeous Christmas present I received from my wonderful friend Virginia (unfortunately no blog... must work on that!)
We share the love of all things French and she has made me a beautiful wallet in french fabric and also sent me a lovely chic french tea towel (not to be used of course!!!)
Sorry it's not a particularly great photo... but the zipper has a little gold fleur de lis attached to it. She is so thoughtful and her attention to detail is amazing. I just love it!!!
Every time I look at it, it makes me happy!
Also making me happy today is the fact it's school holidays and I got the chance to sleep in this morning after working all night. Not having to take Jack to school is making me very happy (and not sooo tired)
I hope you are all having a wonderful Monday!
